Community safety advisory: Motor vehicle thefts (e-bikes/scooters) and burglary

University Police have noted an increase in bike and scooter thefts on the Reynolda campus and in surrounding areas. Since July 14, two e-scooters have been stolen from Deacon Place parking lots, one e-scooter was stolen from outside the Miller Center, and a moped was stolen from outside the Manchester Athletics Center.

Additionally, University Police received a report today of a burglary in the 1100 block of Polo Road. A bicycle was stolen from the location.

E-bikes and e-scooters are classified as motor vehicles under the Clery Act.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to report suspicious activity promptly that they may observe on and off campus at 336-758-5911 (emergency) or 336-758-5591 (non-emergency), through the Wake Safe Mobile App or online. The department is located in Alumni Hall. With immediate concerns, all are encouraged to call the emergency number.

Personal safety and security precautions

• Report suspicious persons or criminal activity by calling WFUPD at 336.758.5911 or submitting the Report a Crime form.
• Download the Wake Safe app.
• Visit the Wake Alert website to sign up for alerts and stay up-to-date on information during an emergency.
• Familiarize yourself with the Emergency (blue light) phone locations around campus.
• Keep car doors and windows locked at all times.
• Using locks on lockers, scooters and bicycles.
• Register your personal property with the University Police to discourage theft.
• Attend crime prevention programs.
• Leave your bike or e-scooter parked in well-lit areas.

As a reminder, e-scooters and e-bikes are fire hazards when stored indoors. For your own safety and the safety of others, do not bring them into residence halls, offices or campus buildings.
